Uttarakhand Assembly Goes for One-day Monsoon Session

The Uttarakhand government said that the state assembly will meet on September 23 for a one-day monsoon session, owing to the pandemic. The State has also decided to do away with the traditional 'question hour', and has allowed the legislators to raise the issues of public interest during the adjournment. The decision was taken on September 20 after an all-party and business consultation meeting.

145% Increase Reported in Arsenic-affected Habitations in Last Five Years

As per data submitted by the Jal Shakti Ministry, the arsenic-affected habitations have surged by 145% in the last five years. The ministry stated in the Lok Sabha that, as on September 17, 2020, there are 4,421 arsenic-affected habitations, which numbered 1,800 in 2015. Reportedly, most of these habitations fall in Ganga and Brahmaputra plains of Assam, Bihar, UP and Bengal. Assam has the highest (1,853) habitations, followed by Bengal.

New Delhi Municipal Corporation Starts Sanitisation Drive at Parliament

The New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has started its preparations to sanitise the Parliament and its surrounding areas, ahead of the Monsoon session. Delhi's civic body has planned to deep-sanitize the Parliament every day before the session and every time the session is adjourned. A 40-member special team has been constituted for this purpose. NDMC has also been conducting COVID-19 tests for the Parliament staff since September 5.

Monsoon Session: 23 New Bills to be Introduced in Parliament

Union Government announced 23 new bills which will be introduced in the upcoming monsoon session. The announcement included 11 bills which seek to replace ordinances. Important bills such as violence against health workers, Jammu and Kashmir official language bill, Multi-state co-operative societies bill are also listed for introduction. The monsoon session will begin on September 14 with the Rajyasabha spokesperson election.

Karnataka Opposition Calls 8-Day Assembly Session "A Namesake"

Karnataka opposition leader Siddaramaiah has requested the state assembly speaker to extend the session, saying eight days of monsoon session would not be enough to discuss all necessary matters. "Looks like the session is being held just for namesake,” he said. According to the State Legislature Act of 2005, the House should be in session for at least 60 days a year, that is not being adhered to, he added.

Opposition to Nominate DMK's Tiruchi Siva for Post of RS Deputy Chairman

On September 14, first day of the moonsoon session, election is scheduled for the post of Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha. While the ruling NDA has still not finalised a candidate, the opposition is planning to support the DMK MP, Tiruchi Siva. Tiruchi Siva is expected to reach Delhi by September 10, after which a decision will be taken. The nominations for the post will close on September 11.
