NGT Forms Committee To Look Into Fly Ash Pollution In Hooghly River
Hearing a petition filed by Dakhsinbanga Matsyajibi Forum, NGT created an expert-committee to investigate the fly-ash pollution of Hooghly river on National Waterway 97. The committee comprises of experts from CPCB, WB-PCB and South-24 Pargana DM. Last year, at least five barges carrying fly-ash from India to Bangladesh were capsized into Hooghly that polluted river and subsequently affected fishing industry. Sunderbans' fragile-ecosystem and breeding-grounds to 'Gangetic-dolphin' and 'hilsa-fish' are also at risk.
