Leopard Population In India Soars By Over 60%; Highest In MP
A recently released report ‘Status of Leopard in India' has shown a significant growth in the number of big cats. Released by Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, the report highlighted that Madhya Pradesh has the highest number of leopards (3,421) in the country, followed by Karnataka (1,783) and Maharashtra (1,690). Notably, the leopard population of India has also increased by over 60% to 12,852 against the 2014 estimate, which recorded 7,910 leopards. The survey was done with extensive research techniques including pattern recognition. The report also stated that actual number of leopards in the country will be higher than the data provided as their population in higher elevations of the Himalayas and in majority of the north-eastern areas was not counted. The report concluded that the leopards are found in prey rich protected areas and multi-use forests. Meanwhile, the minister congratulated the three states - MP, Maharashtra, and Karnataka - for the significant rise in leopards' population in their territories.
