Notice Issued to Environment Ministry, NHAI Over EIA Exemption to Highways
Karnataka High Court on September 26 issued a notice to the Union Environment Ministry and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). The notice was issued following a PIL filed against the exemption of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for widening of highways up to 100 km. Karnataka HC Says No to Cutting of 8500 Trees in Road Widening Project
The Karnataka High Court restricted the Karnataka Road Development Corporation (KRDC) from cutting down 8,500 trees for widening of roads. The court on hearing a PIL against cutting trees on September 1, asked the GKVK University to analyse which trees can be saved. Centre Approaches Delhi High Court to Review Order Directing Translation of EIA
The Centre filed a review petition in the Delhi High Court against its order to translate Environment Impact Assessment draft in all 22 official languages. Considering the plea, the court has sought response from ecologist Vikrant Tongad on whose petition the order was passed. The High Court had initially extended the judgement till August 11, giving more time for comments and objections.

Over 500 Experts Urge Environment Ministry to Withdraw EIA 2020 Draft
More than 500 academics, scientists and researchers have written to Union Environment Minister on September 2 to revoke EIA 2020 Draft Notification. Citing Vizag and Baghjan incidents, they noted the ineffectiveness of the EIA 2006 notification. They opined the Draft Notification will "promote industrialisation at the cost of the environment".
