First Time Since COVID Outbreak, India Repatriates 24 Pakistani Prisoners

Maharashtra: Prison Department Informs 2,061 Inmates Test COVID Positive

According to the data released by Maharashtra State Prison Department on September 23, around 2,061 inmates and 421 jail staff have been diagnosed COVID-19 positive. While six inmates and five staff passed away due to the virus, over 1,767 inmates and 372 staff have recouped. Pune's Yerawada Central Prison was identified as the highest contributor with 261 inmates and 43 staff testing COVID-19 positive.

Uganda: 219 Prisoners Escape With Weapons; Two Killed in Search Operation

About 219 prisoners escaped from a prison in Uganda, late on September 16, along with 15 AK-47 rifles and other weapons. A military spokeswoman stated that the two prisoners were killed in a re-capturing operation and search for others is underway. "It is a mass escape, it included murderers robbers and rapists", she said. This is the third prison escape in the country since the outbreak of COVID-19 in March.
