SC Activates Art 224A Allowing Re-Appointment Of Retd Judges To HC

In a historic step, the Supreme Court, on April 20, activated article 224A, giving power to High Court Chief Justices to bring back retired judges for 2-5 year tenure. Inactive since last 58 years, the article can now be implemented if a HC faces large pendency of cases and will not be against vacancies in the sanctioned strength. Reportedly, only three retired judges have been reappointed since 1963.
