PM Modi commended Uttar Pradesh for the incredible handling of the pandemic's second wave during his visit to Varanasi on July 15. He said that UP which recorded 30,000 cases at the peak of the second wave compared to last year's single-day 7,016 cases, "stood up and battled the virus efficiently". He expressed his admiration for the state's vaccination numbers and its healthcare and frontline workers.  

Under the Smart City project, Varanasi Mayor Mridula Jaiswal inaugurated the first transgender toilet in Uttar Pradesh. Varanasi is all set to become the second city in Uttar Pradesh to raise fund through the municipal bonds. In order to make Varanasi self-reliant, the civic body has been given a target of accumulating Rs 200 crore through these bonds. The funds solicited from the bonds will be invested in numerous infrastructure and development schemes, said the state government. The decision is presumed to improve the image of the civic body in public.

A tragic gas leak accident at the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) plant in UP's Phulpur area has killed at least two people and injured over dozen.
