India Now Houses 41 Ramsar Sites; Lonar Lake, Sur Sarovar New Entrants
India's only crater lake - Lonar lake of Maharashtra - and Sur Sarovar of Agra have been announced as the latest additions to 'Ramsar sites'. With this, the lakes will be internationally recognised and protected. Currently, India has a total of 41 designated wetlands that include swamps, marshes, billabongs, and lakes among others from various states. The Ramsar Convention, 1971, aims to form a network of nations, which preserve wetlands.
