Maharashtra: Scientists Develop New Variety of Wheat Which Provides Increased Yield
Scientists from Agharkar Research Institute (ARI)- an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) have developed a new variety of wheat called 'MACS 6478' which shows a stark growth in the yield. The new variety offers nearly two times more yield than the older "Lok 1" and "HD 2189" varieties for the farmers in Karanjkhop village in Maharashtra. One of the farmers said, “We needed one spark to motivate us and that is provided by ARI wheat variety MACS 6478.” Reportedly, the wheat matures in 110 days and is immune to most of the pests. It is also rich in its nutrient content than other cultivated varieties. The state's seed agency for seed multiplication 'Mahabeej' has started to increase the seed production for other farmers in the state.
