SC Extends Limitation Period For Filing Cases In View Of COVID Surge

The Supreme Court on January 10, restored its previous order to extend the limitation period till February 28 for filing cases before judicial and quasi-judicial fora in view of the alarming surge of COVID-19 cases. The order said that the relaxation has been given in view of arguments advanced by learned counsel, and impact of the surge of the virus on public-health. Notably, Attorney KK Venugopal supported the plea.

Bangladesh Reports 1,116 New COVID Cases In 24 Hours

In the past 24 hours, 1,116 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Bangladesh, taking the overall tally to 1,592,209, with most cases recorded in Dhaka. Around 154 people recovered, while 19,275 samples were tested across the country, for a positivity rate of 5.79 percent. As per figures, the recovery rate is 97.39 percent, and the mortality rate is 1.76 percent.

8,449 New COVID-19 Cases, 4 Deaths Reported In Karnataka

In Karnataka 8,449 new COVID-19 cases and four deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, informed the health department on January 7. The cumulative case tally with new cases in the state mounted to 30,31,052, of which 30,113 are active cases. So far, 38,362 people have died, and 29,62,548 recovered. Reportedly, the positivity rate stands at 4.15%.

SC Distressed Over Cops; Hundreds Of Cases Filed Under Scrapped IT Act

"It is shocking, distressing, and amazing how police across the country are still registering cases under Section 66A of IT Act, " a Supreme Court bench said on June 29. However, the Act was struck down in 2015, a total of 687 cases were registered then, and currently, increased to 1307, said senior advocate Sanjay Parikh. Moreover, SC issued a notice to the Centre stating, "we will do something".

SC To Rope In Retd Judges As Pending Cases Touch Half Million Mark In HCs

In a move to co-shoulder the burden of 5 lakh pending cases, the Supreme Court has decided to rope in retired judges to the High Courts. Utilising the never-used constitutional provision under Article 224A, CJI SA Bobde-led bench asked the High Courts to frame SOPs in this regard. Notably, amid the HC judges vacancy touching 40% of the strength, the apex court also asked the Centre to clear the 45 names suggested for HC judges.

India Records Lowest Number Of COVID Cases On October 13 In Two Months

After a two-month stretch of witnessing rise, India recorded the lowest count of COVID-19 positive cases on October 13. India registered just 55,342 cases in last 24 hours as against the continuous spell of above 70,000 COVID-19 cases per day for the last few weeks. Besides, COVID fatalities have also declined with just 706 deaths reported. The Health Ministry informed that the active cases are consistently dropping since October 9.
