Yogi Govt Lifts Weekend COVID-19-Induced Lockdown

Considering the declining trend of COVID-19 cases, the Yogi government has announced to end the Sunday lockdown in UP on August 20. With the announcement, the market can now operate every day and the movement of people is allowed between 6 am to 10 pm. Notably, the UP government had already lifted the Saturday lockdown on August 11. The state reported only 29 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours.

UP Govt To Rename Jhansi Railway Station; Submits Proposal To Centre

In its new proposal to the Centre government, the Yogi Adityanath-led government has demanded to rename Jhansi Railway station as "Veerangana Laxmibai Railway Station" on August 3. The move was announced by the Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in Lok Sabha. However, the UP govt's demand will be fulfilled if the Railway Ministery and Department of Posts and Survey of India raise no objections.

UP Govt To Reopen School, Colleges And Universities

Considering the decline of COVID-19 cases, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has approved the decision to reopen schools for class 12 students with 50% capacity in the state from August 16. Moreover, the CM also allowed the reopening of colleges and universities from September 1. Yogi government has directed universities and colleges to begin their entrance exams from August 5.

Firozabad To Be Renamed Chandra Nagar As Proposal Passes

The proposal to replace the name of Firozabad with Chandra Nagar was passed under the chairmanship of District Council President, Harshita Singh on July 31, in the district panchayat auditorium. Reportedly, Chandra Nagar is the ancient name of Firozabad that was given by Mughals. On the move, Singh said, ''The House passed the resolution as no one showed any opposition". However, it's yet to be passed by the government.

UP Government To Provide Free WiFi Facility At Public Places

The Yogi Aditiyanath government has decided to provide free WiFi facilities across 17 municipal cities in Uttar Pradesh. The cities include Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Ayodhya, and others. The facility will mainly be available at the bus stand, railway station, tehsil court, registrar office in the state. However, the step is being considered as a step to woo the voters before the 2022 UP assembly election.

UP To Only Allow 'Symbolic' Yatra If All Devotees Are Vaccinated

SC stated that "Right to life of citizens is paramount" while requesting the UP government on July 16 to reconsider hosting even a "symbolic" Kanwar Yatra. "All other sentiments whether being religious is subservient to this basic fundamental right," the bench added. The court further warned to pass an order cancelling the yatra if the government fails to comply with the request. The next hearing is on July 19.

UP government has decided to allow the Kanwar Yatra of Lord Shiva from July 25. Directing the official to ensure strict COVID-19 protocol on July 9, CM Yogi Adityanath said, ''There shouldn't be any hesitation regarding the safe and successful operation of Kanwar Yatras.'' The pilgrims travel to Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri, and Sultanganj for collecting holy water to offer Lord Shiva.

Mathura Brick Kiln Industry Seeks UP Govt Help After Tauktae Effect

Brick kiln owners in Mathura have requested a waiver of royalty and GST from the UP government to survive the heavy losses faced due to cyclone Tauktae. Reportedly, each of the 250 kiln owners suffered a loss of Rs 8-12 lakhs with cascading effect on 50,000 workers due to early closure of the industry which goes on till mid-June. The District Brick Kiln Association also requested for free rations.

SC Directs UP Govt To Shift Jailed Journo Siddiqui Kappan To AIIMS

Reacting on the letter by jailed-hospitalised journalist Siddique Kappan’s wife, the Supreme Court asked the UP government to shift him to AIIMS or any other government hospital in Delhi. Kappan, who contracted COVID in Mathura jail was recently alleged of being chained to bed at Mathura’s Medical College Hospital. The apex court said that he would be sent back to Mathura jail once fully recovered.
