Sri Lanka Clashes: MP Shoots Himself With Revolver, At Least 139 Injured In Violence

Lawmaker Amarakeerthi Athukorala shot and critically injured two persons for blocking his car, on May 9. Police stated that one of whom later succumbed to his injuries. Sri Lanka Prime Minister's Office (PMO) rejected rumours that PM Mahinda Rajapaksa is to step down as the nation's PM, on January 4. "There is no truth whatsoever to the stories appearing on both mainstream and social media that PM Mahinda Rajapaksa is going to step down," said Rohan Weliwita, PM's Media Secretary. Sri Lanka Bans Slaughtering of Cattle; To Import Beef

The Sri Lankan government on September 30 announced a ban on cattle slaughter and plans to import beef for consumers. The cabinet took the decision after PM Mahinda Rajapaksa had proposed the step in incumbent party's parliamentary group meeting. It stated that the usage of livestock in farming and dairy sector has been hit by increased cattle slaughter. However, it mentioned it will make arrangements to import beef for consumers.

Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka on August 8 congratulated PM Mahinda Rajpaksha for his party's thumping win in the parliamentary election. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party, led by Mahihda, registered a landslide victory by winning 145 seats in the 225-member legislature.
