J'khand Writes To Centre, Seeks Approval To Buy Remdesivir From Bangladesh

The Jharkhand government has requested the Centre to allow it to import Remdesivir drug from Bangladesh. Chief Minister Hemant Soren stated that the state government is in talks with some drug manufacturers in Bangladesh to buy around 50,000 vials of the COVID-19 drug for emergency utilization. The supply of Remdesivir has fallen short is several other states across the country owing to the second wave of the COVID-19.

Centre To Increase Supply Of Remdesivir Up To 3 Lakh Vials Per Day

The Centre is eyeing to increase the supply of Remdesivir injection from the current level of 1.5 lakh vials per day to 3 lakh vials a day in the market within two weeks. "20 plants are producing Remdesivir and 20 more plants have been approved for the production of this injection," said Union Chemical and Fertilizer Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. Leading drug makers have already reduced the price of Remdesivir injections.

Leading Pharma Companies Cut Costs Of Remdesivir Injections

Leading pharmaceutical companies, including Cadila Healthcare, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, and Cipla, have cut the cost of Remdesivir injection to ensure a wider availability of the COVID-19 drug. According to the NPPA, all the pharma companies have priced their Remsdesivir injections (100 mg/vial) in the range of Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000. Notably, several states across the country have reported a shortage of the antiviral injection.

Citing Increased Demand, Govt Bans Export Of Remdesivir Drug, Injection

The Centre on April 11 announced a temporary ban on the export of Remdesivir drug and injection, owing to the surge in the COVID-19 cases. Citing “a potential of a further increase in demand for Remdesivir" the order provisioned the ban to continue until the COVID-19 situation in the country improves. The anti-viral drug, manufactured by seven companies in India plays a vital role in treating critical adults patients.
