The US' Treasury and Commerce departments, besides other government agencies, have lately suffered cyberattacks, for which experts suspect Russia-backed hackers as responsible. Global Security Attitude Survey led by Cybersecurity company CrowdStrike has discovered that out of 2,200 respondents from around the world, 56% have faced ransomware attacks. Notably, in 2019, the figure was 42%. While attending a conference of securities and defence professionals, Microsoft President Brad Smith claimed cyber-attacks are a threat to democracy.
