Yamuna River

The concerned authority in Delhi issued an alert after the water level of the Yamuna river breached the danger mark of 205.33 metres. The major cause is due to the heavy rain in upper catchment areas, prompting authorities to chalk out a strategy to evacuate people from low-lying areas. Furthermore, the Delhi flood control room said the water level reached 205.38 metres. Rescue force and boats are on stand-by.
 

Heavy rainfall in Delhi has caused waterlogging in many areas with the Yamuna river's water level inching closer to the danger mark. Locals living near Naini Lake are equally concerned about the rising water levels. The IMD has predicted thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rains in Delhi and its surrounding areas. Reportedly, "a portion of the road near the IIT-Delhi flyover caved in on July 31 as well".

In an attempt to curb Yamuna river's pollution, the Delhi govt has initiated a ban over soaps and detergents if the latest guidelines of BIS not followed. However, the decision comes in the wake of saving Yamuna river from pollution as toxic foam used by Industries, dhobi ghats and households. Besides, the detergent and soap manufacturers will now have to disclose the ingredients used in their products.

The Supreme Court on January 13 issued a notice to Haryana Government over the pollution in the Yamuna River. Reportedly, the notice was issued after taking suo-moto cognizance of the Delhi Jal Board that alleged Haryana over releasing high ammonia polluted water. Besides, the SC bench has ordered Haryana to release the status of sewage treatment plants in Haryana. The 3-judge bench led by CJI Bobde scheduled the next hearing to January 19.… read-more
