The Home Ministry has disclosed that over six lakh Indians gave up their citizenship during 2015-19 in favour of securing citizenship of another nation. Addressing the Lok Sabha on February 9, Union Minister Nityanand Rai added that 1,24,99,395 Indian nationals currently live in foreign countries. Reportedly, employment and education are the primary reasons behind the migration. While India does not allow dual citizenship, it grants overseas citizens some statutory rights under the Citizenship Act, 1955.
