The Centre on August 10 informed the Parliament that no manual scavengers were reported in the country. In response to a query by the lawmaker S Venkatesan of the Communist Party of India, the Centre replied, "though manual scavenging continues there are no proves to vindicate the claims". On the contrary, separate surveys conducted in 2013 and 2018 show the presence of 58,098 manual scavengers in the country.
