Sri Lanka Bans Slaughtering of Cattle; To Import Beef
The Sri Lankan government on September 30 announced a ban on cattle slaughter and plans to import beef for consumers. The cabinet took the decision after PM Mahinda Rajapaksa had proposed the step in incumbent party's parliamentary group meeting. It stated that the usage of livestock in farming and dairy sector has been hit by increased cattle slaughter. However, it mentioned it will make arrangements to import beef for consumers.
