BMC Suspends Marriage Registration In Mumbai Amid COVID-19 Surge
In view of the COVID-19 surge, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has temporarily stopped marriage registration services in Mumbai. "Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is also exploring the provision of the video KYC option," said BMC. In the last 24 hours, Mumbai reported 7,895 new COVID cases. With the continuous surge in cases, the state has 60,371 active cases. Meanwhile, on January 16, Maharashtra reported 41,327 new cases.

BMC Collects Huge Fine Of Rs 84 Crores From COVID-19 Violators
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) collected a huge fine of Rs 84 crores, from people violating face mask rule. The collection include the fine collected from Mumbai police (Rs 15,77,17,574), and Mumbai Railways (15, 39,200) till January 4. Despite strict warning, people of Mumbai were seen without face masks, violating COVID-19 rule. In addition, Maharashtra is the worst COVID-19 hit State from COVID-19 and Omicron.

Dharavi Reports First Case Of Omicron Variant: Mumbai
With a new confirmed case of COVID-19 Omicron variant in Dharavi, Maharashtra's tally for the variant increased to 11. The BMC confirmed a Tanzania returnee to be Omicron positive. The man is currently being treated at Mumbai's Seven Hills Hospital. Reportedly, the government increased strict surveillance and screening at airports to monitor Omicron's situation. The total tally in India for the variant has reached 26 so far.

BMC Issues Notice To Sonu Sood Over 6-Storey Hotel In Juhu
Actor Sonu Sood received another legal notice from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), asking him to convert a six-storey structure into a residential building from a hotel in Juhu. Reportedly, the actor, in July had said that he'd restore the project to a residential facility but failed to do so. ''This office observed that you haven't yet restored the work as per the approved plan,'' read the notice.

Omicron Alert In Mumbai; 1,000 Travelers Land From African Countries
Atleast 1,000 travelers landed in Mumbai from Africa in the last 15 days. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, on November 30, confirmed to have a list of 466 travelers, of which samples of 100 returnees were collected for Covid-19 test. Cinema Halls & Theatres To Open In Maharashtra With 50% Capacity; New SOP
Cinema halls, drama theatres an auditoriums will be opened in Maharashtra with 50% capacity from October 22, while abiding by the Covid-19 guidelines. The SOP of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will be pertinent to those cinema halls, theatres and auditoriums in Mumbai, which will come under its civic jurisdiction. However, food and beverages will not be allowed in the screening auditoriums, and timings will be reduced.

Coronavirus Cases Increase By 50%; Officials Indicate Mild 3rd Wave In Mumbai
Mumbai witnessed a spike in Covid cases, about 50% in the first 17 September days in comparison to August. However, mortality due to Covid has decreased by 38%. From September 1 to 17, almost 7,407 covid cases have been reported, compared to August's 4,943 cases. Reportedly, the testing has increased by 13%, indicating that cases are rising. Also, a higher vaccination rate reduces the chances of a "destructive third wave".

BMC Inaugurates Maharashtra's First EV Charging Station
Aaditya Thackeray, the Environment Minister of Maharashtra, inaugurated an electric vehicle charging station where "seven EVs can be charged" simultaneously at a public parking lot in Mumbai's Dadar on August 17. This is the first EV station set up by the BMC, where four chargers will only take 1.5 hours to charge. Meanwhile, Thackeray said, ''It's necessary to give priority to start charging stations.''

BMC Spends Rs 21,000 On Repair, Maintenance and Construction Of Roads: RTI
Replying to Andheri MLA Ameet Satam's Right to Information (RTI) plea, the civic body has reported that Birhanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has spent a total of Rs 21,000 crores on the repair, maintenance, and construction of new roads in the last 24 years. Most of the money was spent between 2013-2014 which amounts to Rs 3,201 crore. “Bad roads are among the most pressing problems in this city,” said Satam.

BMC To Add Extra Polling Booths For February 2022 Civic Polls
Keeping the Covid-19 pandemic in mind, BMC will include 4,000 polling booths in addition to the current 7,900 booths for the BMC civic polls scheduled for February 2022. Each booth that previously occupied 1,400-1,500 voters will now occupy 800. “We are charting out a detailed plan for conducting BMC elections given the pandemic. We aim to ensure voters face no inconvenience", Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani said.
