Alarming Call To Climate Change; Coral Reef Declines By 50%

In a shocking revelation, a report published in the journal One Earth on September 17 found the world's coral reef has declined to half since the 1950s after surveying reefs in 87 countries. The reasons behind the reef's dilapidation are said to be global heating, overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction. The study has also reported a dramatic fall of more than 60% of reefs diversity so far.

John Kerry To Visit India To Bolster Fight Against Climate Change

The US special presidential envoy for climate John Kerry is expected to visit India, on September 12. During his two-day visit, Kerry will launch "Climate Action and Finance Mobilisation Dialogue" which is a part of a plan that will help India to reduce carbon emission to 33-35% by 2030. He will also meet with the environment and power & renewable energy ministers Bhupender Yadav and R K Singh, respectively.

'Orca' World's Largest Plant To Clean Air Starts Work: Switzerland

To fight against climate change and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air, the world's largest plant named ''Orka or Energy'' has become operational on September 8. Reportedly, Orka is built by Switzerland's Climeworks and Iceland's Carbfix and reportedly turns carbon dioxide into rock. While running at its capacity, it can suck 4,000 tonnes of CO2 every year that is equal to the emission from about 870 cars.

10% Rise In 17 Yrs In South Africa's Greenhouse Gas Emission: Reports

Climate change activities and the Greenhouse effects have led to a rise in global temperature. The recent National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report 2000 to 2017 shows that South Africa's emissions have risen by 10.4% in 17 years due to radiation, chemicals & plastic waste, and others. "There was an annual average increase of 2.0% between 2000 and 2009," the Forestry, fisheries, and environment department said.

Greenland Witnesses Rainfall For The First Time In History: Scientists

The highest point of Greenland witnessed rainfall instead of snow for over two days last week. Rainfall in Greenland is regarded as one of the dangerous effects of climate change as scientists haven't recorded rainfall ''since record-keeping began in 1950''. The rainfall on ice raises the melting rate of snow. Earlier, the IPCC warned in its report that the global sea levels will increase by about 24 feet.

KolKata: Temperature May Rise By 4.5 Degree Celsius In 2081-2100

According to a recent report by the IPCC, Kolkata may witness a rise of 4.5 degree celsius in annual temperature in 2081-2100 than 1850-1900 due to urbanisation. The people in the city may also experience a temperature of 35 degree celsius or more for 150 days in a year. Moreover, the reports warned against rising sea levels about 60 centimeters near Sundarban, just 100 km away from Kolkata.

Electron Precipitation Intends To Cause Ozone Depletion In Mesosphere

The phenomenon known as electron precipitation causes aurorae, which has been detected as the same reason to cause ozone layer depletion in the mesosphere. This depletion in the ozone layer can cause severe climate changes in the earth. The depletion can particularly occur during aurorae. Moreover, this has been found out by a group of scientists headed by Prof. Yoshizumi Miyoshi from Nagoya University in Japan.

India To Limit Use Of HFC Refrigerants To Curb Climate Damage

The Union Cabinet on August 18 approved India's ratification on curbing the use of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) following the "Kigali Amendment of the Montreal Protocol". In October 2016, as many as 197 countries undertook the Amendment to limit the use of HFCs by the end of 2040, as it causes severe environmental and climate damage. India will begin the process of limiting the use of HFC refrigerants from 2032 onwards.

Indian Cities Likely To Go Underwater By Century-End: IPCC Report

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has published a report which was analyzed by NASA claiming that many Indian metropolitan cities will go underwater by up to  2.7 feet by 2100. The IPCC has given dire warnings of unpredictable weather due to sudden changes in climate and environmental factors. NASA has also projected a rise in sea levels all around the globe.

Global Temperature To Reach 1.5 ºC In Two Decades, Warns IPCC

The Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned in its sixth report ''Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis'' the global temperature of the earth will reach 1.5 degrees Celsius in two decades. According to the report, more heatwaves, longer summer seasons, shorter cold seasons, and severe can occur due to global warming. However, reducing global emissions to net-zero by 2040 can curtail such activities.
