No Instances Of Manual Scavenging Seen In India: Centre
The Centre on August 10 informed the Parliament that no manual scavengers were reported in the country. In response to a query by the lawmaker S Venkatesan of the Communist Party of India, the Centre replied, "though manual scavenging continues there are no proves to vindicate the claims". On the contrary, separate surveys conducted in 2013 and 2018 show the presence of 58,098 manual scavengers in the country.

Doctors, Healthcare Workers' Families Received Rs 50 Lakh Insurance Claim:Government
Under the government’s 'Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Package,' Rs 50 lakh insurance was paid to each of the families of 921 doctors and healthcare workers who died of coronavirus. The provision for this scheme has been extended for 180 days with effect from April 24, 2021. Bharati Pravin Pawar, minister of state stated that necessary steps are being taken for the health and security of the medical officers during Covid-19.

Twitter-Govt Row: Vinay Prakash Chosen As India's Grievance Officer
Twitter has appointed Vinay Prakash as its Resident Grievance Officer under India's new IT regulations. The nomination comes in the event of massive friction between the government and Twitter that has lasted since March when the regulations came into effect. Twitter requested a time frame of eight weeks from Delhi HC to appoint a grievance officer erstwhile and acknowledged to draft its first compliance report public by July 11.

India Demoted To "Partly Free" Country By Think Tank 'Freedom House'

RBI Asks Banks To Limit Stake In Insurance Sector
The Reserve Bank of India has requested banks to dilute their stake in the capital intensive insurance sector to 20%, reducing the limit to over half. The regulator urged banks to focus on the dominant area of business instead of the insurance sector, seen as a 'money guzzling business,' Earlier, banking institutions were eligible to hold a 50% stake in insurers. Interestingly, the move came after the Centre increased the FDI cap to 74%.

Budget Session To Start From January 29; Union Budget On February 1
The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs' has announced the dates of budget session to be held from January 29-February 15. Conducting the session in two phases, the second phase will be held from March 8-April 8. Reportedly, the Union Budget will be presented on February 1. The committee cleared that both the houses would sit for four hours a day. Moreover, President Ram Nath Kovind will head the joint sitting on January 29.

Uttarakhand Congress Alleges Centre of Conspiring Against Public Sector
Suryakant Dhasmana, vice-president of Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee, accused the Centre of 'conspiring' against the public sector by boosting privatization. Speaking at a rally organised to protest privatization of Railways, he alleged that the Modi government intends to “cripple the public sector”. “Like Coal India, government is preparing to auction BSNL, Air India and Indian Railways,” he added, Congress would not allow that.
