Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray declared on January 17 that his government aims to consolidate Karnataka's Marathi majority areas. He said the merger would be a "true tribute" to the martyrs. Maharashtra has claimed to annex Belgaum, Karwar, and Nippani that were a part of the then Bombay presidency. Reportedly, the day has been commemorated by Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti in memoriam of those who surrendered their lives for the cause.
