Akhilesh Yadav Knows He'll Lose In UP Election, Says Sidharth Nath Singh
Ahead of Uttar Pradesh Assembly Polls, UP Minister Sidharth Nath Singh lashed out at Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. He said that Yadav knows he'll lose the elections, that's the reason he is making new excuses. "Yesterday he accused the Election Commission. Today, he wrote to the EC demanding suspension of government officers," Sidharth said. UP elections are scheduled on February 14 and counting will be held on March 10.

Sonu Sood Loses Punjab's ''State Icon'' Status Given By EC
Bollywood actor Sonu Sood has been removed as Punjab's ''state icon'' by the Election Commission of India, informed state Chief Electoral Officer S Karuna Raju, on January 7. Sonu, who belongs to the Moga district, was given the status a year ago by the ECI. ''This decision was mutually taken by me and the EC in light of my family member contesting in Punjab Assembly elections,'' tweeted Sonu.

MNF Wins By-election On Tuirial Assembly Seat In Mizoram
The Election Commission on November 2 announced that the ruling Mizo National Front's (MNF) candidate K Laldawngliana won the byelection to the Tuirial assembly seat in Mizoram. Laldawngliana won the election by a margin of 1,284 votes against the Zoram People's Movement's (ZPM) Laltlanmawia. The seat was vacated after the death of ZPM's associate MLA Andrew H Thangliana. The MNF now has 28 MLAs in the 40-member assembly.

EC Grants New Party Names, Symbols To Chirag Paswan & His Uncle
Ending the dispute between Chirag Paswan and his uncle Pashupati Paras over party names and symbols, the Election Commission on October 5, granted them new names and symbols. As per the EC's order, Chirag Paswan will use the "Lok Janshakti Party" name with the symbol of "helicopter". While Pashupati Paras' party will be called "Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party", with "sewing machine" as the symbol.

Tamil Nadu Poll Body Announces Dates For Local Body Election
The Tamil Nadu Election Commissioner on September 13 announced that the rural local body election will be held in nine newly constituted districts on October 6 and 9. Election Rallies Should be On Hold Until Polls Declared In Punjab: SKM
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) on September 10 advised political parties of Punjab not to conduct election rallies as it impacts the campaigns by cultivators. However, the three parties including Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and Aam Aadmi Party disagreed with the decision. “They will face the music if they refuse to accept our appeal and it will be considered as anti-farmer," BS Rajewal president of Bhartiya Kisan Union said.

Nomination Process For Bihar Panchayat Polls 2021 Kicks Off
Following the prolonged delays due to COVID-19, Bihar's State Election Commission has begun the nomination process for the panchayat elections on August 25, ending on August 31. The elections will be held in 11 phases in every district except those affected due to floods. The phases will kick off from September 24 and will conclude on December 12. The commission will start the counting after two days of voting.

BJP Earns 50% More In FY20 Compared To FY19
According to the Election Commission of India, the annual audit report of BJP shows its income increases to Rs 3,623 crore in 2019-20 from 2,410 in 2018-19 while it spends Rs 1,651 than Rs 1,005 in FY19. However, Congress's income declined to Rs 682 from 998 core. Other national and regional parties earned below Rs 200 crore. Notably, BJP spent Rs 296.38 crore on media publicity in 2019-20.

Ex-UP Chief Secy Anup Chandra Appointed As Election Commissioner
Former Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, Anup Chandra Pandey, has been appointed as the Election Commissioner on June 8. A 1984 batch IAS officer, Pandey had retired in 2019 from the service. He will fill the post which became vacant due to Sushil Chandra's promotion to the Chief Election Commissioner post. Pandey will now accompany Rajiv Kumar who is the second Election Commissioner in the 3-member poll panel.
