Earthquake Of 7.6 Magnitude Jolts Indonesia; Tsunami Alert Issued

In Indonesia, an undersea earthquake of magnitude 7.6 on the Richter scale jolted Flores Island on December 14, said the US Geological survey. The epicentre of the major quake was located 112 kilometers north of the town of Maumere at a depth of 18.5 kilometers under the sea. The country's meteorological agency said, ''hazardous waves are possible for coasts located within 1,000 of the quake epicentre.''

Volcanic Eruption In Indonesia Turns Entire Village Dark

In Indonesia's Island of Java, a volcanic eruption occurred at 2:50 pm on December 4. It caused smoke and ash to reach as high as 40,000 ft in the air. Videos showing locals trying to escape the huge plumes, surfaced the internet. Reportedly, the region turned dark due to ash clouds. "Thick columns of ash have turned several villages to darkness," said Lumajang district head, Thoroqul Haq.

India Allows Export Of 20 Mln "Novavax" Vaccine To Indonesia: Sources

India has approved the shipment of 20 million doses of the Novavax (NVAX.O) COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Serum Institute of India (SII) to Indonesia, according to reports. Further, the government has also decided to allow 10 million doses of Covishield, also manufactured by SII, to be exported on the global vaccine-sharing program. As per sources, the government has no plans to place an order for Merck & Co.'s COVID-19 pill.

Shipowners Alleges Indonesian Navy Asks Money To Release Ships

Over a dozen shipowners paid about $300,000 apiece to the Indonesian navy to get their ships released. Reportedly, the ships were illegally anchored near Singapore in Indonesian waters. As per the shipowners, payments were given in cash to naval officials or by bank transfer to intermediaries. Librarian In Indonesia Lends Books In Exchange Of Trash

Raden Roro Hendarti, a Librarian in Indonesia's Java island has started lending books to children in exchange for trash. The librarian has been reported to distribute books going from place to place using a three-wheeler, and collect 100 kg of trash every week, which is then sorted and sent for recycling. According to her statement, she wants to inculcate reading in kids and make them aware of the environment.

Indonesia Plans To Start 'Booster Shots' For COVID-19

Indonesia has planned to give booster shots of COVID-19, once 50 percent of the population are vaccinated. Besides, the government has claimed that 29 percent of its population of 270 million citizens have been vaccinated so far. Reportedly, Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, said in a statement, that the plan prioritizes the elderly and poor who are insured by the government, while the rest have to pay for the vaccine.

Japan To Donate 60 Mln COVID-19 Vaccine Doses To Asian Nation

After donating 30 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to Asian nations, Japan pledges to donate 60 million doses on September 23. Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga also confirmed the decision to double the vaccine's donation at a global summit held in the US. Vietnam, Taiwan, and Indonesia are among the beneficiary nation. So far, nearly 55 percent of Japan's population is fully vaccinated, equating to the US vaccine number.

Mount Merapi Ejects Cloud Of Ash, Covers The Sky Up To 3.5 Kms

Due to the eruption of Mount Merapi, Indonesia’s active volcano, the cloud of ash engulfed the sky up to 3.5 kilometres in the area on August 16. Although authorities reported no casualties, it warned everyone against ''potential lave flows'' to maintain a distance of ''a five kilometre radius'' from the center. Reportedly, the last eruption of the volcano had claimed over 300 lives in 2010.
