Kolkata: Roads Blocked Ahead Of The BJP Rally; Police Resort to Lathi-Charge, Use Tear Gas
The Kolkata police resorted to lathi-charged, used water cannons and tear gas on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Yuva Morcha on Ocotber 8. The rally to Bengal Secretariat Nabanna was carried out express dissatisfaction over the 'law and order' of the state. Several parts of the city including Vidyasagar Setu, Howrah Bridge road were closed for vehicular movement and only police and emergency travel services were allowed. The police had placed barricades across the area which created chaos from Howrah till Burra Bazar. Niraj Shah, who owns a shop in Burra Bazar said, “We had no idea that the roads will be blocked, I went out like every day for work but had to return as there were riots on the roads and the traffic had come to a standstill.”
