Parliament Budget Session To Resume With COVID-19 Restrictions

With limited seatings and COVID-19 protocols, the Union Budget Session 2022-2023, is to resume from March 14. The Government of India, will continue the second phase of the budget session with media restrictions, seating limitations, with 138 MPs sittings and 282 MLAs sittings, whereas remaining members will be arranged to sit in galleries, for the two houses (Lok Sabha & Rajya Sabha) sessions. The session will continue till April 8.

DMK MP NR Elangovan's Son Died In Road Accident

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Rajya Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu NR Elangovan's son Rakesh (22) died in a road accident on March 10. MP’s son Rakesh was traveling from Puducherry to Chennai along with one more passenger. The car crashed into a road divider injuring the passenger and killing Rakesh on the spot. Notably, in 2020, NR Elangovan a former advocate became a Rajya Sabha member.

TRS MPs Issue 'Privilege Motion' Against PM Modi Over Telangana Statehood Remark

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MPs moved notice of "privilege motion" against PM Narendra Modi, on February 10, during the Rajya Sabha session. The notice was issued to the RS Chairman Venkaiah Naidu. Notably, the Telangana Government and MPs took offence to the recent remarks of PM Modi over Telangana formation as an independent state and AP Reorganisation Bill 2014, and demanded an apology.

DMK Members Walkout Of Rajya Sabha After Venkaiah Naidu Refuses To Take Up NEET Issue

Members of DMK, the ruling party of Tamil Nadu, walked out of Rajya Sabha session over Tamil Nadu Governor's decision to return the NEET exemption bill, on February 4. PTI reported that DMK members insisted on raising the NEET issue during the Zero Hour, for which chairman Venkaiah Naidu did not agree. After the incident, Naidu said, "if the others had cooperated," the issue would have been taken up.

President Kovind Gives Assent, Allows Govt To Spend Extra Rs 3.73 Lakh Cr

In a relief to the Central Government, President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to the act, allowing additional Rs 3.73 lakh crore expense in FY 2021-2022. The Appropriation Act 2021, authorises the Government to spend extra money for grants and expenses. Passed in Rajya and Lok Sabha during the Winter Parliament session, the act was approved by President Kovind On January 12 and Gazette notification was released on January 14.

Veteran JD(U) Leader Mahendra Prasad Dies At 81

Mahendra Prasad, a seven-term Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar and industrialist, passed away at the age of 81, on December 27. He was reportedly died due to age-related issues. He was associated with Bihar CM Nitish Kumar led Janata Dal (United) and became a Lok Sabha member once in 1980. ''His demise is a big loss to the society and politics besides industry,'' said Kumar.

President Kovind Gives Assent To Surrogacy (Regulation) Act 2021

President Ram Nath Kovind, on December 25, gave assent to the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act 2021, with immediate effect. The bill was passed by Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on December 8 and 17, respectively. As per the bill, surrogacy only based on altruistic, without any money involved other than medical expenses and insurance during pregnancy. Therefore, surrogacy should not be commercial.

Rajya Sabha Adjourned Sine Die Amid Uproar From Opposition MPs

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die, after repeated uproar of the opposition MPs, on December 22. Chairman Venkaiah Naidu, adjourned the session and said, Winter Session concludes today with much below business, reported ANI. Initially, the session was scheduled to end on December 23, however due to constant uproar of opposition over suspension of 12 MPs, the Winter Parliament Session was adjourned a day ahead.
