Forest Fire Breaks Out In Kandi Forest Area: West Bengal
In West Bengal's Murshidabad district, a forest fire broke out in the Kandi forest area, on July 22. Immediately after the incident, fire tenders rushed to the spot. Operation is underway to douse the wild fire. Forest fires are mostly human-made, and some are also caused due to heat. Earlier in May, in West Bengal's Kolkata, fire gutted a clothing shop in Chandni Chowk area.

Spurious Liquor Claims Lives Of 7 In West Bengal's Howrah
In West Bengal's Howrah, at least seven people died after consuming spurious liquor in the Ghusuri area, on July 20. While six have been admitted to a hospital for treatment, several others are in a critical condition. A probe is underway, and further details are awaited. Over a week ago, four people died after consuming spurious liquor in West Bengal's Bardhaman district.

AITMC Proposes West Bengal Name Change To Bangla: Nityanand Rai
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said they have received a proposal to change the West Bengal State's name to Bangla. On July 19, during the second day of the Monsoon Parliament Session, the Ministry of State in MHA Nityanand Rai confirmed the received proposal and said, the MHA doesn't have any such revamped guidelines for heritage city name change. Notably, Saida Ahmad of the All India Trinamool Congress proposed.

New Eel Species Ariosoma Bengalense Discovered By ZSI Scientists
A new species of eel has been discovered in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district by scientists of Zoological Survey of India (ZSI). The new species has been named Ariosoma Bengalense, with resemblance to the place of its discovery. The eel was collected from Petuaghat fishing Harbour. Reportedly, the new species of eel, unlike other species, has larger eyes and is brown in colour.

Hanskhali Gang-Rape Case: CBI Files Chargesheet Against 9 Accused In POCSO Court
In the Hanskhali gang-rape and murder case in Nadia district, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed chargesheet against nine accused, on July 9. According to the investigation, the minor victim was intoxicated and gang-raped by three accused. Following the incident, her parents were threatened by another three accused. After the girl died, the accused cremated her body, without giving an opportunity for medical examination.

3 TMC Workers Shot Dead In South 24 Parganas: West Bengal
In West Bengal's South 24 Parganas districts, three Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers were killed by unknown miscreants, on July 7. Reportedly, the incident occurred at around 9 am, when the victim trio was riding on a motorcycle near Peer Park, when they were gunned down by unknown assailants. An initial investigation has revealed that the shoot out occurred due to some personal enmity.

BJP’s West Bengal President Criticizes TMC For Failing To Take Stern Action Against Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra
Sukanta Majumdar, head of BJP in West Bengal, criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress for failing to take harsh action against Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra for her comments demeaning Goddess Kaali. Majumdar urged TMC to "either expel or suspend" Moitra for making offensive comments about religion and upsetting the majority of Hindus. The Bengal BJP leader further threatened that the Mahila Morcha member would hold a sit-in protest.

Man Sneaks Into CM Mamata Banerjee's Residence, Breaches Z-Category Security: West Bengal
A man whose identity and age is not disclosed, sneaked into West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's residence, on July 2. Reportedly, he breached the Z-Category security cover and spent the night sitting in a corner, until he was spotted in the morning by security personnel. The police have taken high cognizance of the matter and has arrested the accused. The man was reportedly unarmed and further details are awaited.

TMC Leader Mukul Roy Resigns As PAC In West Bengal
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in West Bengal Assembly Chairman Mukul Roy submitted his resignation to Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee. On June 27, the senior TMC leader and MLA Roy said, "My tenure (as PAC chairman) was for one year and it is about to end soon. So I decided to resign." Notably, the speaker had appointed Roy as the PAC chairman in July last year.
