Seriously Consider Lockdown To Curb 2nd Wave: SC Advices Centre, States

The Supreme Court on May 2 called for a serious consideration from the states and the Centre for a complete lockdown to curb second COVID-19 wave. However, the court stated to be aware of lockdown's socio-economic repercussions on marginalized communities; hence, advised the governments for a complete arrangement beforehand. Besides, the court also demanded blueprint of plans to tackle coronavirus crisis now and in future.

In England, South Asian Are More Likely To Contract COVID: Study

A study by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) has indicated that South Asians are more likely to contract COVID-19 in England. Published in the 'Lancet' journal on April 30, the study suggested that during the second wave, the Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Indians were most vulnerable. It cited health factors such as BMI, blood pressure and underlying health conditions among others as the reasons behind this.

Delhi Government Extends COVID-19 Lockdown Till May 10

The Delhi government on May 1 has decided to extend the lockdown for one more week. With this, all the restrictions imposed by earlier orders will remain in force till May 10. However, essential activities will remain operative during the period. Besides, with a valid e-pass for movement, self-employed people can also travel during this lockdown period. Delhi is currently facing shortages of oxygen, hospital beds and COVID-19 vaccines.

COVID-19: K'taka Likely To Witness 3rd Wave in October, Says TAC

Karnataka’s Technical Advisory Committee has said that once the COVID’s second wave flattens in July, the third wave will hit the state in October. The most affected in the third wave will be children below 18 years as they wouldn't be inoculated, added TAC. Suggesting social distancing and face mask as mandatory, the TAC said senior citizens will be safe from the third wave as they will be vaccinated by then.

DGCA Extends International Flight Ban Till May 31; Cargo To Operate

The Director General of Civil Aviation has extended the international flight suspension till May 31 due burgeoning second COVID wave. However, the suspension will not affect international cargo flights that have been previously approved by the Aviation Authority. While the earlier flight ban was scheduled to end on April 30, the DGCA has decided to allow scheduled international flights for selected routes on case to case basis.

COVID-19: Tokyo 2020 Organisers To Test Athletes On A Daily Basis

The Tokyo Olympic organisers have said that athletes and those who come in contact with them will be subjected to COVID-19 tests on a daily basis. In addition to this, all participants are required to have two negative reports before taking part in the games. Already banning spectators, the organisers are yet to take decision on the same in June ahead of the games scheduled to start on July 23.

TN Orders 1.5 Crore COVID Vaccines To Jab 18-45 Year Old For Free

Days before the next phase of vaccination scheduled from May 1, the Tamil Nadu government has ordered 1.50 crore vaccine doses on April 28. The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) will deliver vaccines free of cost for the people in 18-45 age group. Meanwhile, the Public Works Department (PWD) has also undertook a project to provide piped oxygen supply to additional 12,370 beds across the state.

Madras HC Blames EC For 2nd COVID Wave; Says Will Stop Counting Of Votes

The Madras High Court lambasted the Election Commission on April 26 saying EC is singularly responsible for the second wave of COVID-19 and probably should be booked under murder charges. The HC also warned on cancelling the counting of votes on May 2, if EC fails to submit the blueprint of implementing COVID-19 norms. The HC blamed EC for failing to implement COVID-19 guidelines during election rallies.

Saudi Arabia To Ship 80 Metric Tonnes Of Liquid Oxygen To Help India

Amid mounting oxygen crisis, Saudi Arabia is shipping 80 metric tonnes of liquid oxygen to India to help meet its rising demand due to the sudden surge in COVID-19 cases. The shipment is being undertaken by Adani group and the Linde Corporation. The Indian mission in Riyadh tweeted, "Embassy of India….thanks to the Ministry of Health Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for all their help, support, and cooperation”.

US Assures To Increase Supplies To India As COVID Crisis Deepens

Expressing concerns on COVID situation in India, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan promised to support India. Blinken tweeted “We are working closely with our partners in the Indian government” and assured of deploying additional supplies. A White House spokesperson said that the additional details on the supplies to be deployed for assistance will be announced soon.
