Govt Raises Abortion Limit To 24 Weeks; Medical Termination Of Pregnancy Rules

The government has notified the new Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Rules, 2021, that revised eligibility criteria for abortion, making it up to 24 weeks, which was previously up to 20 weeks. The eligibility criteria are also considered in cases of women who want to change their marital status during pregnancy, like widowhood or divorce, and even in cases of rape, incest, or sexual assault.

Hollywood Celebs Witnessed Boycotting New Abortions Laws In Texas

As the new restriction has been imposed on abortions rights in Texas, some Hollywood celebrities were witnessed boycotting the law. On September 1, actress Patricia Arquette took to Twitter to said, ''We'll not stop until women have full equal rights in every state in America.'' Jack Antonoff also shared his views and said, ''Support abortion rights until the laws are repealed.''

Delhi HC Allows Termination Of Abnormal Foetus During Pregnancy

Following a request, the Delhi High Court on August 1 allowed a woman to abort her 22-week foetus due to defect and abnormality issues that also had very few survival chances. The decision was given by Justice Rekha Palli after reading the medical reports of the child's abnormality given by the AIl India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS). The parents were allowed to get the pregnancy terminated at the hospital of their choice.

A Dalit woman has registered a case of rape against a Muslim man in UP's Pilibhit. The police said that both met on Facebook and then she was raped on the pretext of marriage. However, the man recorded the act and forced her to become a Muslim. Reportedly, the man also pressurized her to undertake abortion and arrange Rs 7-lakh. The matter is being investigated, said the police.

Abortion Up To 24 Weeks Legal; Rajya Sabha Passes Bill

The Rajya Sabha, on March 16, passed the amended Medical Termination of Pregnancy bill that has increased the abortion period from existing 12-20 weeks to a maximum of 24 weeks. Meanwhile, pregnancies seeking termination beyond 24-weeks will have to be approved by the State-level medical board. However, the opposition highlighted that the medical board's approval of abortion would be demeaning and a breach of privacy.
